You Should be an Artist

You should be an artist they say looking around my home

You’ve done every art style imaginable from graphite to charcoal to acrylic to oil to watercolor to ink to electronic to pastels

But all I feel like is an imposter because those pictures I just copied from my phone

You should be an artist they say as I tell them all the art classes i’ve taken from San Francisco art collage to cuesta community graphic design and animation from an animator from disney studios

But all I remember is how out of all the students there I was never the best one

At at the LA Art conferences they told me that I would never get anywhere unless I was

You should be an artist they all say asking me to paint them something fun

But I’m not fun

I’m dark like in the middle of a moonless night waiting patiently for the sun

And while I’m there all alone I whisper in the dark “You should be a writer”

And I smile back and say maybe I already am one
