The Essence Of Who I Am

You turn around 

Terror in your eyes 

Looking over the mountains and valleys

Replaying the joys and trials of your past

I pull your hand to continue you down the narrow path 

Looking at the sign that says 

Entering a new stage of life 

“Lets go”, I smile 

We can do this together 

You turn to go forward with me 

But I see a tear slip down your face 

“What’s wrong”, I whisper 

“I don’t want to leave it all”, you reply 

“It’s all I’ve ever known” 

The sign for leaving childhood connected to the path 

I hold both of your hands and kiss your tears and say 

“My love if you don’t keep going

You will never know the joys you will be missing 

Just look at what’s ahead” 

The path seemed to glow with the signs showing the future

Marriage, parenthood, career, retirement, happiness. 

“OK”, you said starting forward with a small smile

I squeeze your hand saying 

“I promise I’ll always be by your side”
