I NEVER SLEEP

Published by

on

Grief comes home promptly at 5 o’clock

He kisses me softly on the cheek

I wince

He just smiles

Settles in my bed

I slip in once he is asleep

But he always knows

He presses against my chest

I can’t breathe

I can never breathe

His eyes are closed

But I know he is looking at me

I lay there

Trying not to move

Finally the sun comes up

I look over and he is staring at me

I shakily bring him his black coffee

Grounds cover his teeth

He is always smiling

I never sleep

I live with Grief

Is grief personalized here or the speaker is referring his/her partner as grief?

Both interpretation carries vastly different tone.

I personally love both perspectives, and it can definitely be perceived both ways. That is one of my favorite things about poetry is every reader will perceive the poem a diffrent way. When I wrote the poem I did write grief personalized but that doesn’t mean it can’t be the other way as well. Thanks so much for your insight and I hope you enjoyed the poem!
